Fatal Shooting in Floreat: Kate Chaney MP Urges Her Shocked Community to Support Each Other (25 May 2024)

Yesterday’s fatal shooting in Floreat has shocked and devastated our community.

In our usually safe neighbourhood, everyone has some connection to this family or this street. I know this area well - my office is just a street away.

I’m heartbroken for this family whose loved ones have been killed.

I know this incident has left many people in my community feeling shaken and upset. Please look out for each other. We’re a strong, close-knit community here and supporting one another is what we do best. Remember there’s always Lifeline too if you need to talk to someone.

I’m grateful to the police and emergency services for their swift response to the shooting.

Police are still investigating, and details are still coming to light. I won’t be speculating on what might have happened.

What I can say, and what has been confirmed, is that two more women have had their lives cut short by a man with a gun.

Their deaths are a reminder that violence against women can occur in any – and every – community. Every four days, a woman is killed by a man in Australia.

Enough is enough.

Without knowing the full details, so many women in our community who I have spoken to last night and today feel exhausted and furious about seeing yet more women dying. Seeing it so close to home makes it very real.

Men must stop killing women.
