Curtin recognises big picture thinking needed to solve cost of living crisis (22 May 2024)
Tax reform and additional social and affordable housing have been identified by Curtin voters as priority issues for addressing the rising cost of living. A recent survey by Kate Chaney MP, Federal Independent Member for Curtin, revealed widespread awareness of the cost of living increases, with housing costs, especially renting, being the top concern.
"More than a third of respondents suggested tax reform to make home buying easier compared to investment properties, followed by calls for more social and affordable housing," said Ms Chaney. This feedback aligns with her conversations while door knocking in Curtin, where many young people struggle to afford moving out and parents see adult children returning home.
To assist with cost of living challenges, Ms Chaney is hosting seminars with the Financial Wellbeing Collective, a local collaboration supporting financial wellbeing. The next event is on 13 June for small business owners. Helena Jakupovic, General Manager of the Financial Wellbeing Collective, advised everyone to conduct a financial health check amid the highest Consumer Price Index rise since 2000.
