Antisemitism and Social Cohesion
I am deeply troubled by recent events in Australia and Western Australia and believe that antisemitism and all other forms of racism, have no place in our society.
Australia is a culturally diverse nation. Hate crimes and violence and the recent racist vandalism in Dalkeith are an attack on the democratic values that underpin our national identity.
Almost half of us were born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas. Australians of all backgrounds should feel safe and free in our country, without fear of being subject to racial slurs or vilification.
I condemn any antisemitic or other racist language directed to those living in Australia.
Following the horrific attack on the Adass Israel synagogue in Ripponlea, I wrote to the Prime Minister and urged him to act decisively - to reach across political divides and call for all parliamentarians to come together and demonstrate leadership in their communities.
I will continue to engage with the government on appropriate responses to combat antisemitism, including support for anti-racism community initiatives as well as education and community dialogue.
